From Icon to Avangarde
At the beginning of the 20th century, artists revolutionized not only the form but also the very meaning of art, pioneering new directions and movements—Rayonism, Suprematism, Futurism. What was the source of their bold ideas? Turning to iconography, they identified universal visual codes: the rejection of illusion, reverse perspective, sacred color, light as revelation—and reinterpreted these principles, creating their own "theology" of art.
In this lecture, we will examine how iconography influenced the work of artists K. Malevich, N. Goncharova, V. Kandinsky, and other significant figures in Russian art of the first half of the 20th century. We will explore parallels and transformations: from face to image, from a golden background to the white expanse of the canvas, from sacred symbol to pure geometry.
